Cosequin for Dogs and Cats

A Glucosamine and Chondroitin Joint Supplement by Nutramax Labs

Cosequin is a joint supplement for dogs and cats made by Nutramax Labs which contains glucosamine and chondroitin and is used to treat canine and feline arthritis.

Glucosamine and chondroitin are substances found in normal joints and joint cartilage and they play an important role in maintaining optimal joint function in both dogs and cats. Cosequin, produced by Nutramax Laboratories Inc, is a joint supplement for dogs and cats which contains both glucosamine and chondroitin.

Why Cosequin and Nutramax Labs?

While there are many different formulations available containing either glucosamine or chondroitin or both, these joint supplements are considered to be neutraceutical rather than pharmaceutical in nature. As a result, these joint supplements are not as closely regulated as pharmaceutical medications and many of the available supplements do not meet their own label claims regarding the ingredients listed on the bottle.

In contrast, Nutramax Laboratories utilizes standards comparable to those used in the pharmaceutical industry to manufacture their medications and can guarantee that each tablet or capsule contains exactly the same ingredients in the same amounts that are listed on the label of the bottle. According to Nutramax Laboratories, Cosequin has been shown to be "effective, safe, and bioavailable in published, controlled US studies".

When Should Cosequin be Started and How Long Does It Take to Work?

Cosequin is best started early in the course of disease. If your dog or cat is limping, experiencing a change in gait or seems stiff or reluctant to jump, you should consider starting Cosequin. Joint disease is often a progressive disease process and the sooner Cosequin is started, the more time your dog or cat will have to respond favorably. Of course, any time your dog or cat is acting abnormally, you should also consult your veterinarian.

Cosequin is a joint supplement and works to provide nutrients in the form of glucosamine and chondroitin to the joints of your dog or cat. As a result, Cosequin tends to have a gradual effect. Though some pets will respond more quickly, four to six weeks is not an unusual response time.

How is Cosequin Administered?

Cosequin is available in unflavored capsules which can be opened and sprinkled over the food for both dogs and cats.

For larger dogs, a double strength chewable tablet is also available and usually readily accepted as a treat.

For cats, specially formulated tuna and chicken flavored capsules are available and can be opened and sprinkled on food.

Follow the label directions for dosing your dog or cat.

Once response is noted and your dog or cat is comfortable, dosage may be reduced. For large dogs, often one to two capsules/tablets per day are sufficient to maintain a comfortable level of pain control. For cats, one capsule given every other day may be sufficient. Consult the label directions for proper dosage recommendations according to your pet's weight.

Effects of Cosequin on Your Dog or Cat

Administration of Cosequin should make it easier and more comfortable for your dog or cat to perform normal every-day activities. The glucosamine and chondroitin supplement should make your dog or cat better able to jump, go up and down stairs, go for a walk, or even just rise to a standing position. You are likely to see a gradual increase in your pet's comfort level.

Are There Side Effects Likely when Giving Cosequin Joint Supplements?

No, Cosequin is safe for both dogs and cats. Occasionally, mild gastro-intestinal upset may occur with administration of Cosequin but generally passes quickly without intervention.

Can Cosequin Joint Supplements be Given to Normal Dogs and Cats?

There is some evidence that low levels of glucosamine and chondroitin present before an injury may hasten the healing process when an injury to a joint occurs for a dog or cat. Therefore, there may be some benefit to giving Cosequin to normal dogs and cats as well. This is especially true for dogs which may be prone to joint injury, such as service or working dogs or dogs and cats who are overweight.

Cosequin and Feline Urinary Diseases

Cosequin glucosamine and chondroitin joint supplements have been found to improve urinary bladder health in cats by producing a protective coating on the inside of the bladder wall.
